Hooked on the Scroll: How Social Media Addiction Is Stealing Our Sleep

イメージ
This blog is about social media addiction.       In today’s hyperconnected world, it’s become almost second nature to reach for our phones the moment we wake up—and the last thing we do before falling asleep. But what starts as a quick scroll through Instagram or TikTok can easily turn into hours of mindless swiping. More and more people are finding themselves trapped in this late-night loop, sacrificing precious hours of rest. Could our obsession with social media be quietly fueling a global sleep crisis? General Introduction of Our Topic 1. Why We Chose This Topic      We decided to focus on the connection between social media addiction and sleep deprivation because this is a problem that many of us personally relate to. In today’s world, social media has become a big part of our daily lives. It’s how we stay in touch with friends, get news, and pass the time. But at the same time, we’ve noticed how easy it is to lose control—especially a...

Survey Report: Social Media Use and Sleep Habits      This report presents the results of a survey we conducted regarding social media usage and sleep habits. The goal of this survey was to better understand how these factors affect young people’s daily lives and well-being. 1. Basic Information of Respondents      To begin with, we collected basic demographic information such as age, gender, and nationality. Most respondents were around 19 to 20 years old, approximately the same age as the members of our group. In terms of gender, the distribution was nearly equal, with slightly more female participants. As for nationality, the majority of respondents were Japanese, with a few participants identifying as Chinese or Russian. All respondents currently reside in Japan. 2. Social Media Habits and Addiction      We then asked a series of questions related to social media usage and addiction. In response to the question “How much time do you...

Why We Chose This Topic

MAO【SOCIAL MEDIA ADDICTION】 The reason why I chose this topic      I chose this topic for personal reasons. There are days when I spend nearly the whole day on my phone. Even while preparing for university entrance exams, I couldn’t stop using it. Staring at the screen for hours—especially late at night—leaves me mentally drained. I never find the right moment to stop, so I just keep scrolling without purpose. This habit often leads to anxiety, depression, or lack of sleep, and I know it’s unhealthy. I want to change, but since smartphones are essential in today’s world, it’s hard to find the right balance. What I know about it so far      I know that people of all ages—from children to adults—can struggle with social media addiction. Social media was originally meant to have a positive impact on the world, but now, with terms like “digital detox” becoming popular, many people believe that staying away from social media is actually healthier. On platforms l...

Various Perspectives

A User's Perspective (Maika)  A Physician's Perspective (Maika)  A School Counselor’s Perspective (Mao)  A Minority Person's Perspective (Mao)  A User's Perspective Introduction      In today’s society, I find that social networking services (SNS) have become an indispensable part of my daily life. While they are incredibly useful for staying connected with friends, gathering information, and expressing myself, I often find myself becoming overly dependent on them. This state of "social media addiction" has a serious impact on my sleep. Why We Can’t Stop Using SNS     I find that SNS platforms are designed to be accessible anytime, anywhere, constantly delivering new posts and notifications. Especially at night, I often pick up my phone with the intention of "just checking for a moment," only to find myself scrolling for thirty minutes or even over an hour. I think this happens because my brain is seeking the next rewarding or interesti...

Areas to Explore

Over the next several weeks, we will be conducting research to explore the topic of social media addiction and sleep deprivation. To guide our investigation, we have created 30 research questions that cover different aspects of the issue. Our goal is to answer each question using reliable sources and present what we learn through this blog. Each answer will be supported by at least two references, including academic studies, expert opinions, or trustworthy websites. By the end of this project, we hope to gain a deeper understanding of the topic and share practical insights with our readers. What factors contribute to compulsive scrolling behavior on social media platforms? How much time do individuals typically spend on social media each day, and what variables influence this duration? To what extent are individuals capable of abstaining from social media for a full day, and what challenges do they face? How do social media notifications affect users’ concentration a...

Answers to Research Questions 1–30

 1. What factors contribute to compulsive scrolling behavior on social media platforms?      Compulsive scrolling on social media—often referred to as “doomscrolling”—is influenced by both psychological and design-related factors. Psychologically, feelings such as anxiety, boredom, and the fear of missing out (FoMO) play a significant role. Research has shown that FoMO is not only linked to problematic social media use but also contributes to doomscrolling behaviors, primarily through difficulties in intrapersonal emotion regulation. Individuals experiencing FoMO may struggle to manage internal emotional states, which in turn drives them to repeatedly check social media in search of connection or reassurance.      From a design perspective, social media platforms employ features such as infinite scrolling and intermittent exposure to viral content, which exploit reward-based mechanisms. These design elements foster a sense of unpredictability and inter...
