Why We Chose This Topic

MAO【SOCIAL MEDIA ADDICTION】

The reason why I chose this topic

I chose this topic for personal reasons. There are days when I spend nearly the whole day on my phone. Even while preparing for university entrance exams, I couldn’t stop using it. Staring at the screen for hours—especially late at night—leaves me mentally drained. I never find the right moment to stop, so I just keep scrolling without purpose. This habit often leads to anxiety, depression, or lack of sleep, and I know it’s unhealthy. I want to change, but since smartphones are essential in today’s world, it’s hard to find the right balance.

What I know about it so far

I know that people of all ages—from children to adults—can struggle with social media addiction. Social media was originally meant to have a positive impact on the world, but now, with terms like “digital detox” becoming popular, many people believe that staying away from social media is actually healthier. On platforms like X, I often see people using harsh or extreme language without hesitation. In fact, both my friends and I often feel mentally tired after using social media. Even so, it’s hard to live without smartphones today, which is why I think this issue is so serious.

The purpose of this blog

The purpose of this blog is to explore the causes and effects of social media addiction and to understand why it’s so difficult to break the habit. I also want to look into the symptoms and problems this addiction causes, and help readers realize how serious the issue really is. Through this blog, I’ll also try to find healthier ways to use social media. I hope it encourages others to reflect on their own habits, too.

Maika Yoshida【SLEEP DEPRIVATION】

The reason why I chose this topic

I chose the topic of sleep deprivation because I think it is a common problem for many university students, including myself. Sometimes we stay up late to study or use our phones, and we don’t get enough sleep. I wanted to learn more about how lack of sleep affects our health and daily life. I also hope to find some good ways to improve my sleep habits.

What I know about it so far

I know that sleep deprivation can cause many problems, such as feeling tired during the day, trouble concentrating, and a weak immune system. I also heard that not sleeping enough for a long time can increase the risk of serious health problems like heart disease or depression. Many people say that using smartphones before bed makes it harder to fall asleep, so I think our lifestyle is connected to sleep issues.

The purpose of this blog

The purpose of this blog is to learn more about sleep deprivation and how it affects our lives, especially for students. Many of us do not get enough sleep because of study, part-time jobs, or too much screen time. Through this blog, I want to understand the causes and effects of sleep problems, and also share tips or information that can help improve our sleep. I hope this blog will be useful for people who are also struggling with sleep issues.

  1. I myself suffer from social networking addiction and lack of sleep. I especially sympathized with one sentence, "I just keep scrolling without purpose. This habit often leads to anxiety, depression, or lack of sleep, and I know it’s unhealthy"
Therefore, I think it is the addiction that keeps us watching, even though we suffer from mental stress and do not feel happy.

In addiction, in terms of a lack of sleep, I especially sympathized with one sentence, " I know that sleep deprivation can cause many problems, such as feeling tired during the day, trouble concentrating, and a weak immune system. "I am also aware that the next day after not getting enough sleep, I may have trouble concentrating and become distracted. (Chiharu)

  2. I really understand what you wrote because I also experience sleep deprivation, especially when I feel stressed. Sometimes, even if I want to sleep, my mind keeps thinking about things like school or daily problems, and I end up using my phone instead. I think your topic is very important because many students have the same problem. You clearly explained why it’s hard to stop using social media and how it can affect both sleep and mental health. I’m looking forward to reading your next posts and learning some good tips for better balance.
