1. What factors contribute to compulsive scrolling behavior on social media platforms? Compulsive scrolling on social media—often referred to as “doomscrolling”—is influenced by both psychological and design-related factors. Psychologically, feelings such as anxiety, boredom, and the fear of missing out (FoMO) play a significant role. Research has shown that FoMO is not only linked to problematic social media use but also contributes to doomscrolling behaviors, primarily through difficulties in intrapersonal emotion regulation. Individuals experiencing FoMO may struggle to manage internal emotional states, which in turn drives them to repeatedly check social media in search of connection or reassurance.
